CHAPTER 16

I didn’t want to answer Cassara’s question. “That isn’t fair.”

Cass folded her arms. “Yes, it is. If I believed you wanted to hurt somebody, I would kill you myself. So would Rene, despite his... interest in you.”

“I’m sorry. Public safety should be your number one priority and if I’m being objective, I would want somebody... babysitting a new vampire. I’m just a little old to be starting over.”

Cass shrugged. “Not really. While older vampires were turned at a younger age as humans tended to procreate in their late teens a few hundred years ago, it is more common for people to request turning after they have children. Now the preferred age is thirty-five to forty.”

“I have never seen an older vampire,” I said.

“Yes, you have. Turning makes the skin more youthful looking, but it doesn’t alter a person’s features. We have had many turns of people in their early fifties. The testing process allows us to see if a person is viable, but it becomes less so after sixty or so.”

“You prefer people who have had children. Human ones?”

“We do. When we have not diminished the human gene pool, but there are exceptions.”

“Such as?”

“I was turned at a younger age because I was dying, but several of the young women were barren like me. They could not have children naturally, so that stimulation doesn’t apply.”

I glanced around the opulent ballroom before moving toward one of the black tablecloths. My fingers trailed over the soft fabric. There were no utensils on the table, only crystal goblets, but I noticed that several tables in the back had high-end china and gold cutlery. “Why do you have dinner plates?”

Cass joined me by the table and picked up one of the beautiful glasses. “Obviously, these are for blood, but the place settings are for the human guests. I assume you would want your family to attend your debut.”

“They will be allowed here for this?”

“Of course. They are now an extended part of the clan. We will protect them and provide for them financially. It is our way when we accept a human into our clan.”

I blinked several times. “It’s amazing that you provide financial support.” Cass couldn’t understand what that meant to me. While Isra would always help Jana, she was only working part-time while she went to college.

“Yes. Since you are Rene’s fledgling, she will receive a ridiculous amount. It’s based on the net worth of the fledgling’s sire.”

“He isn’t my sire.”

Cass laughed. “He is now. You were attacked and Rene claimed you. Like me, you have unlimited funds.” She unzipped her suit slightly and pulled a black card from the lining. “This is an unlimited card.”

“What do you mean, unlimited?”

“It doesn’t have a credit limit.”

“That’s impossible. Rene isn’t the richest man in the world.”

Cass laughed. “Wow, you are naïve.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“He’s been alive for over two thousand years. While he has each clan listed as owners of their prospective properties and holdings, he is the overseer. Technically, it all belongs to him.
